Pulling a fifth wheel across the country

Day 1-Horseheads, NY to Avon, Ohio

Day 2-Avon, Ohio to Des Moines, Iowa

Day 3-Des Moines, Iowa to Cheyenne, Wyoming

Day 4-Cheyenne, Wyoming to Jackson Hole, WY

And we are off...

Our three week adventure has begun. The first night we drove to Avon, Ohio. The traffic in Ohio was terrible but we still managed to get there in 5 hours. We pulled into the Cabella’s parking lot to find it full of shipping containers and the only RV spot they had available was already taken. We decided to chance it and stay right in the middle of the parking lot that was directly next to the interstate. Have you ever slept directly next to an interstate highway before? Ugh!! It was absolutely awful. Not much sleep for either one of us. We were both fully dressed and ready to leave the interstate noise behind by 5am. A quick stop at a gas station to fill up, a Dunkin coffee and we were road bound.

Did you know that when you tow a 33’ fifth wheel you can actually hear the truck guzzling the gas! We had to stop ever 2 hours to fill up. Thankfully there was a truck stop that was easy to get into each time we needed gas. 10 hours later, many gas stops and more traffic than imaginable we reached Des Moines, IA. We wanted a full hook up site to fill up on water and clean out the RV tanks. We opted for a KOA which we knew would have a full hook up. If you have ever been to a KOA campground you know that it’s a super fun campground for kids. Not quite the relaxing, quiet environment we are now used to. They did however have a beer tent and they delivered a pizza to our site! Anxious to get back on the road we were packed up and gone by 5am the next morning. On our way to Wyoming!

Welcome to Wyoming

The next day brought another 10 hour drive but much less traffic. Lots of road work and gas stops that were not as easy to get into to made it stressful. We couldn’t wait to get out of the truck. We arrived at Curt Gowdy State Park around 3pm. Our site faced the lake and the view was amazing! We went for a short hike around the lake then back to camp. We heated up some sausage zucchini soup and were in bed by 7:45pm. Really, the travel exhaustion is a thing! The next morning we were up, made our coffee and we’re on our way to Jackson Hole by 4am.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

The drive from Cheyenne, WY to Jackson Hole, WY was beyond beautiful. There were herds of elk, antelope and the most beautiful landscapes along the drive. The beauty of the landscape out here makes you feel like you have gone back in time. A time when things were simple, wild and free. We arrived in Jackson Hole, WY 7 hours later and finally after 4 days detached the camper from the truck. Over all our journey out was a success. It was so much more exhausting than we had anticipated but our Jackson Hole, WY destination was so worth it. Can’t wait to share Jackson Hole with you.
